Our afternoon trip to the Veolia facility is now fully booked, so our programme delivery partner Garden Organic has arranged this second opportunity for Greening Communities to explore what happens to our waste after it leaves our homes, and consider how this can inform local action on waste prevention. Please note that children aged 7 and over are welcome on this trip. More information below.

Join Paddy Halling from Garden Organic on a visit to Veolia’s Portsmouth Energy Recovery Facility and Materials Recycling Facility, where Hampshire residents’ kerbside waste is taken for energy recovery, and recycling for sorting and processing. You’ll get a tour of the facilities, including the Energy Recovery Facility, where non-recyclable residual waste is safely incinerated, generating electricity to power thousands of Hampshire homes, and the Materials Recycling Facility, where recyclable waste is sorted.
The tour provides a fascinating and eye-opening insight into the scale and complexity of Hampshire’s waste and recycling system. You’ll see the huge quantities of waste arriving at the Energy Recovery Facility (210,000 tonnes per annum), alongside the processes involved in sorting recyclable materials, is a powerful reminder of the need for waste prevention before recycling.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about waste management and recycling in Hampshire, as well as to share ideas and experiences with other Greening Campaign Champions and volunteers.
You’ll come away with:
- A better understanding of what happens to our household waste and recycling after it is collected
- An insight into how Hampshire’s Energy Recovery Facility processes non-recyclable residual waste
- The opportunity to ask questions about waste management and recycling in Hampshire
- New connections with Greening Campaign Champions and volunteers working on waste prevention across Hampshire
- Ideas, insights and inspiration to take back to your community and help encourage waste prevention
Who it’s for
Greening Campaign Champions and volunteers (and children aged 7 and over under their care) who are interested in waste prevention, recycling and understanding what happens to our waste after it leaves our homes.
You don’t need previous experience of running a waste prevention project to attend.
