Health Impacts of Climate Change
The changing climate is bringing new challenges for our health- particularly for the vulnerable – those with existing health conditions, who live in areas of deprivation, are on a low income, or have mental and physical health disabilities, or other restrictive factors.
Our personal health is inextricably linked to the health of our planet, ecosystems, and societal infrastructures- and all of these are undermined by climate change.
Through all our Pillars you’ll look at the rising risks to the welfare of residents in our communities due to climate change, and make your communities more aware.
In particular you’ll look at the immediate serious impacts that come from:
- Extreme heat waves
- Insects and the diseases carried by them, such as ticks & mosquitoes
- Toxic air pollution (made worse by high temperatures)
Meet ‘Terry the Tick’- Greening Ringwood’s safe method to open conversations with children about ticks. When we are faced with a challenge on how to sensitively carry a scary message, our communities always find the answer!
Awareness raising through education can be very powerful and can literally save lives now, as it encourages people to change their attitudes and behaviour. This in turn helps us to make informed decisions about lifestyle choices.
We support you to raise awareness in your communities:
- with information on how to carry the messaging
- by providing physical messaging like our mini cards to open conversations.
- by providing information you can take to events
- with tips on activities you can run to raise awareness
- by providing sample articles for community magazines
Your Pillar Experts will support you to develop activities and events that will help you and your community explore, express and understand the health impacts of climate change.
