Space for Nature
We want great places to live that are both good for people and for wildlife. We want nature to be part of everyone’s lives, and for children to grow up with wild and green spaces to explore. So, increasing biodiversity and capturing carbon through nature is of vital importance, and communities are best placed to improve both.
Our Space for Nature Community Officer:
- supports you to map your community, whilst understanding what valuable habitats you already have. You then put together a plan of action to create new habitats, link habitats with corridors for wildlife, and improve existing habitats.
- helps you to support households to provide space for nature in their front or back gardens. This is a great opportunity to create corridors throughout your community providing food and shelter for travelling wildlife.

This pillar has activities for all ages, and it doesn’t matter if you have absolutely no experience of wild spaces or nature based skills. Whether your community is urban or rural, there is an opportunity to support and encourage nature to thrive.
“Greening Campaign is a great scheme for getting the local community positively involved. Planting 1,000 whips was the best community event I’ve ever been involved in”. Greening Shedfield
We help you build a plan for action, and bring passionate residents together to act to support nature. Our expert helps with advice and experience built through years of working in this field.
It can be such an eye-opening experience to learn what rare species are living beside you, or what habitat you can help create. This might be in public spaces, community owned spaces, council owned, privately owned, or of course your own back gardens!
What else you’ll get from being part of this pillar:
- Feel better connected to nature and know you are making a real difference to wild space
- Come together with your community in the fresh air, often taking gentle exercise (or sometimes quite vigorous, if you choose)
- Reduce loneliness of either yourself or others
- Feel more healthy mentally, from connecting with nature
- Make new friends
- Give something back and feel part of the community where you live
Joint Pillar Events
Throughout the year all 5 Greening Campaign Pillars come together to run joint events. This shows how we can tackle climate change challenges through shared solutions. For example, growing fruit & veg at home cuts down food miles so uses less energy, encourages you to waste less, and any waste scraps can be composted to use in your next year’s growing reducing waste.
All we need to do is take a step towards taking part! When the community supports nature, magic happens!
