Modern society is not designed to prevent waste . . . we buy, we use (often for a short period), and we put it in the recycling or rubbish bin. Waste does more than create litter or landfill. Any waste increases the use of energy and increasingly scarce raw materials, and increases water use across the globe. Waste is a fundamental problem for our society and our over exploitation of the planet on which we live.

The aim of the Greening Campaign is to try and stop this cycle and raise awareness of waste prevention
and its importance in each community.

What better way then to raise awareness of the need to prevent waste, to rethink rubbish, than by engaging younger members of the community – from local schools, brownies, guides or scout groups – and get them to make monsters or sock puppets out of rubbish then enter them into a competition to win a (sustainable) prize. That’s exactly what Greening Bishops Waltham and Greening Shedfield did at their events and the entries were absolutely brilliant! Such a simple but effective way to get young people talking about waste prevention and engaging the community.
