Space for Nature

Volunteers from Greening Ringwood‘s Space for Nature Team worked together with teachers and students from Ringwood Sixth Form’s Year 12, on two challenges as part of their Sustainability Day.

Woodworking challenge – many thanks to Ringwood & District Round Table, Ringwood Mens Shed, and the Energy Efficient Homes Team, for the making and constructing of some fabulous swift and other bird nest boxes. As we know so many birds and other wildlife are in decline, and by providing safe homes for these birds to breed and nest in, will help biodiversity in the Ringwood area.

Nature Bioblitz – a Bug and wildlife hunt with a difference – using different technologies to track and record species in Nature, such as the Merlin Bird ID, Seek, iNaturalist, iRecord, Big Butterfly Count, Mammal Mapper and British Trees, the Year 12 students were able to easily identify birds, plants and bugs, as they moved around the school and the immediate vicinity, which made a simple ‘walk’ so much more exciting (and made them all aware of what’s in their local environment – great for noticing what species are doing well, and which ones need our help to thrive). They finished off by making some seed bombs with local wildflower seeds so we can do some ‘guerilla’ seeding!! Many thanks to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust for putting this exciting morning together.

What a fantastic day – well done to the Year 12 students!
